This week, I am reviewing another Super Hero Squad box set. SHS are little figures that stylistically represent characters from the Marvel Universe. Recently, three sets were released as part of The Avengers series. It says "Comic Series" on the box, but the graphics and logo are reminiscent of the recent movie. Maybe because some of the figures used have been repaints from comic book based series in years past. This "Secret Invasion” contains a new Nick Fury and has a Skrull Warrior and Iron Man that we have seen before, albeit these have new paint apps.
As you can see by the front of the box Avengers movie is the theme. The four main characters are all there; Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor are all present in Super Hero Squad form.
The back of the Secret Invasion box shows the figures in a little bit more detail as well as the other two sets in this series.
The first figure is Iron Man. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do with him aside from this one pose. Oddly enough Iron Man has articulation in at his head, shoulders and waist, but pretty much he can only do the pounding the pavement pose. The sculpt of the figure is really nice, though.
As I mentioned before, we seen this figure in a previous assortment. It was part of the Iron Man 2 - High-Tech Showdown set. I kinda like this version better as his armor is gold as opposed to yellow.
Next we have a very happy Skrull. It's not often you see the villain grinning ear to ear but this guy is very happy. Originally, we've seen this Skrull in the similarly named box set "Secret Invasion Begins." The only difference that I can see is the color of his gun. I was never able to find that initial box set so, I was happy to be able to add this one to my collection. Ironically, I would not mind having a few duplicates of this figure to start a little Skrull army.
And rounding out this set, is a new sculpt of Nick fury. In full Avengers mode, Nick is ready for action with his two huge guns. Nick does not have any articulation aside from his wrists which is pretty weird because the only thing you can really do is slightly re-angle the direction of the gun. Not very impressive, I must say. However he does look pretty cool just standing there.
So the Secret Invasion is not that secret anymore! The Skrull is on the loose and unless he's directly underneath Iron Man or the left or right of Nick Fury he can pretty much do whatever hescrollbars=yes wants. Maybe that's why he's smiling. It's a nice set to pick up if nothing more than getting your hands on the smiling Skrull and the new Avengers movie Nick Fury.
What do you think? Leave your comment below or tweet me at Twitter.com/TanyaTate. I'd like to know your thoughts...what would you have rather have a new figure sculpt with virtually no articulation or an previous sculpt with articulation but with a slight repaint?
Until next time heroes,
